The entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol (KP) requires Spanish cement factories
covered by Directive 2003/87/EC to control their carbon dioxide emissions. The search
for the optimal combination of available measurements of these emissions adjustment
to reconcile the objectives of production with environmental requirements, require new
approaches in planning industrial production, incorporating new parameters and
variables. In this thesis we address the optirnization decisions through an integrated
approach, using a linear prograrnming model, which jointly considers viable
altematives to reduce emissions, both from the application of the flexibility
mechanisms of the KP, as in tended to improve products and production processes.
Their implementation will determine, in advance, decisions that optimize the use of the
productive resources ofthe cement industry
Advances and challenges in the automotive industry: driving towards sustainable mobility
The digital transformation of the automobile industry linked with the new challenges of sustainable mobility, is generating important changes in the business models of automobile groups. The constant efforts to innovate in its vehicles and offer services associated with them are essential to guarantee its own sustainability. Automation, connectivity, electrification and shared mobility (ACES) are the four technological drivers of this sector and have been taken as a reference in this research to examine and learn how the main European automobile groups are addressing the global challenges associated with them. It is of special interest to offer this compilation of information that allows obtaining a current and well-founded vision of the advances in the sector, giving visibility to the commitment, effort and performance that these companies are carrying out. Likewise, the results obtained show different levels of integration and progress of the ACES factors in the automobile companies studied
Exploring ERP systems adoption in challenging times. Insights of SMEs stories
This paper offers a study of real success experiences of SMEs, in relation to the motivations of selection and implementation of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and its benefits that also allow the confrontation with theoretical concepts, based on reviewed literature. We followed a qualitative approach based on in-depth content analysis of SMEs online stories included in the ‘Customer Stories’ directory available on the SAP website using the R language to scrape data and statistical analyses. The findings provide evidence that the use of ERP, for managing SMEs, is constructive to their success and improves the quality of their decision-making processes.
Although the technologies implemented by SMEs were characterized by their specialisation and adaptation, SAP Business One is the leading solution, without significant differences by sector compared to Europe. They also reveal that the effectiveness of implementing ERP is intrinsic to the reputation of the software vendors and the high professionalism of the partners. Additionally, the results indicated the short-term approach of SMEs when implementing this type of tool, takes precedence over the strategic and economic benefits. Furthermore, the empirical analysis supports the association of some motivational factors of ERP implementation and selection with characteristics of the organisations, such as activity and size.Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Huelva / CBU
A practical application of statistical process control to evaluate the performance rate of academic programmes: implications and suggestions
Purpose – This study aims to properly and objectively assess the students’ study progress in bachelor
programmes by applying statistical process control (SPC). Specifically, the authors focused their analysis on
the variation in performance rates in business studies courses taught at a Spanish University.
Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative methodology was used, using an action-based case
study developed in a public university. Previous research and theoretical issues related to quality indicators of
the training programmes were discussed, followed by the application of SPC to assess these outputs.
Findings – The evaluation of the performance rate of the courses that comprised the training programs
through the SPC revealed significant differences with respect to the evaluations obtained through traditional
evaluation procedures. Similarly, the results show differences in the control parameters (central line and
control interval), depending on the adopted approach (by programmes, by academic year and by department).
Research limitations/implications – This study has inherent limitations linked to both the
methodology and selection of data sources.
Practical implications – The SPC approach provides a framework to properly and objectively assess the
quality indicators involved in quality assurance processes in higher education.
Originality/value – This paper contributes to the discourse on the importance of a robust and effective
assessment of quality indicators of the academic curriculum in the higher education context through the
application of quality control tools such as SPC.Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Huelva / CBU
The importance that it has acquired is the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) that has created a new reflection on the meaning, purpose and functions of
business in recent years. In this work, to deepen the understanding of the phenomenon
of CSR, we present a breakthrough in the study developed by a project aimed at
developing a tool for the diagnosis of CSR in the hotels. Its purpose is to develop a self-
assessment questionnaire, which forms the framework for companies in the hospitality
industry who wish to make an analysis of its management, establish the basis upon
which the proceedings are planned to define their policies, which backbone throughout
the adjustment process towards a responsible and committed economic, social and
environmental. To this end, in a first phase defined the conceptual framework to
identify relevant aspects of the RSC, which is essential for the design of the tool, which
is the focus of the second phase of the project. This will allow hotel companies to raise
awareness about the issues to manage and determine the scope of its management and
resources that will be involved in the process
The National Plan for Emission Rights Allocation establishes for 2005/07 the bases for the individual assignment of rights to the factories included in the area of application of the Real Decree Law 5/2004, in order to contribute to the reduction of emission that causes the climatic change, therefore fulfilling the commitment assumed by our country with the Kioto Protocol. In this paper, after considering the sectorial distribution of emission, we accomplish the balance of the first year's plan, analyzing the implications for the industrial Spanish sector, focusing on the Andalusian Community, one of the most affected for its number of implied factories as its assigned emissionsEl Plan Nacional de Asignación (PNA) de Derechos de Emisión establece para 2005/07 las bases para la asignación individual de derechos a las instalaciones incluidas en el ámbito de aplicación del Real Decreto Ley 5/2004, con el fin de contribuir a la reducción de emisiones que causan el cambio climático, cumpliendo asà el compromiso asumido por nuestro paÃs con el Protocolo de Kioto.
